this city is SO COOL! its so old- everything is made of wood with no nails- just joints- and cobblestones. there was even an earthquake not too long ago and the old city was barely damaged considering how it was built. the city looks so old but the stores are new and artsy and cool- weve done a lot of shopping and eating. there are a bunch of western restaurants here to thats been nice to let our stomachs settle.
sunday was our first day here - we went to an awesome chinese western restaurant that could have easily been in DC- it was delicious. then we went to the Black Dragon Pool- this awesome park with bridges and FLOWERS and we took tons of pics cause it was perfect weather and things were in bloom (compared to everywhere else we went..) so i was pumped. we also went to a museum about the Naxi (Nachie) people who are indiginous here and have been around for thousands of years. we still have their culture and language because the paper they use is bark that worms dont like. then we walked up the hill in the middle of town to see a birds eye view of town which was beautiful. that night i went with our chinese professor and four of the guys to try dog- it was actually not so bad but ive been thinking about it alot recently- debating in my mind about eating any animal now- but it was a good experience and we had alot of fun joking about it so we didnt cry haha
monday we had a busy busy day! we went to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and climbed a glacier!! we took cable cars up to a point and then climbed the many many stairs up to 15000 feet!!! so cool. the ride was amazing. then we went down to the water, put on traditional garb and RODE YAKS! so funny. actually hilarious. then we went to see a village where murals from thousands of years ago were protected because the villagers put posters of mao over it so the soldiers couldn't destroy it during the cultural revolution. we then went to a tea ceremony and tried a bunch of local teas which were delicious!!
today we went to the yangtze river to Tiger leaping gorge which is the place with the smallest distance across. the river goes through 11 provinces and provides water for one tenth of the world's population. YES. wow. tiger leaping gorge is named this because there is a myth that a tiger was being chased by a hunter and he leaped across- but its too cold here for tigers so they actually dont live anywhere near here. then we went to another village- i have a lot more to write but im exhausted.. tomorrow we leave for kunming- elephant riding!
