"you won't die on the plane, you won't die from malaria, but you'll probably die on a tro-tro"

Yesterday, we woke up to register for classes- which was a slow process and now we're waiting to get our ID cards to finish and go to each department and register for classes seperately (so silly)- alot of stuff here doesn't quite make sense to me at times- like unorganized- but you gotta let it slide. After alot of waiting, we decided to leave- we got some food at the night market (a little clump of hutches that sell stuff like bread and fried eggs (amazing) and fresh fruit (nothing has ever tasted so good) and we got some kenke- sorta like a tamale in the sense that its cooked in a corn husk but its like fermented corn and cassava and stuff who knows with some spicey sauces- we avoided the fish that looked like it had been sitting for like two weeks - and got some pineapple (yumm). Jenna went to soccer practice (she's on the team for the tournement this weekend!! so awesome!!) and Michelle and I were bored and decided we needed to adventure. We wanted to go to the beach but then decided the pool was easier- so we got Ivy and Megan, asked Dennis where to go, got on a tro-tro to Shangri-La (hotel)and there we were! We found a little market next to it that was touristy because it was next to a hotel but we bargained and I got some beautiful art- then we went to swim but it was $5 and we only wanted like an hour so we decided to come back later. We tro-troed home (we met this kid here on this program where they tour them around Ghana, bringing the professors with them, and they stay in homestays- shoulda done that let me tell you), stopped at Bonjour- like an "on the run" that has Chicken Inn, Pizza Inn, and Creamy Inn (ice cream) and they sell like beer and stuff- its quite a hang out- and Michelle and I had a coconut while Ivy and Megan had pizza- we found some friends, Will and Kindy, from the ISEP program and sat with them while they had a beer- then these two Ghanaian students (super high on coke) came up to talk to us and we joked with them until we decided it was more than time to leave. We all walked together, got a kebob, went back to the dorms. Jenna was back, we showered, explored to find food but it was too dark. At night I get really nervous because 1) I'm afraid of the dark anyways and 2) I don't feel safe walking with just girls on a campus I barely know and is not very well lit. So we just ate fried egg sandwiches at night market- cool with me. Then we just hung out, talked, visited Dennis who fed Jenna some rice, hung out with more ISEP kids. I can't wait until everyone is out of their oritentations so that way we can meet them more- cause right now everyone is so busy so we just like hang out the 5 of us- which is fine but we need more friends. haha.

It's so weird being here- its so surreal- me and Jenna joke that its like summer camp. I'm still not 100% comfortible here either just because we stick out like a sore thumb all the time and people are always paying attention to us so I feel like we're a target all the time. It can be hard to feel save when there's no way to blend in. Its exhausting to be on your toes all the time- worrying about bugs, the sun, people, eating the right food, drinking the right water, sweating, getting lost, getting robbed, taking the meds- just alot to remember for little old me!

Today we're trying to register for classes again - and then who knows. Maybe another adventure. Tomorrow we finnnnallly get an orientation of some sort so lets see what happens.

Thanks for all the comments! I really appreciate them! Be sure to email me about whats going on at home! I heard Obama won VA- awesome.

Hey Avra, Love reading your musing and getting a bit of a feel for what you are doing and going through. We are all so very proud of you and for you and also know that this is not easy what you are doing and so much of it by and for yourself.
Does it all fall under the saying that what does not kill us makes us stronger? If so you will be the strongest one of all.
Much love sweetheart, Mom
